The Beginning of a Big Year at Argonne Post 32!

I know, I should get around to my little corner here more often, but all I can tell you is I will do my best to make it a habit, especially in the next 13 months or so.  We recently passed the mark of 99 years since our original Charter is signed.  We submitted our paperwork on June 6th, 1919 and our Charter is dated June 23rd, 1919.  Back in the day, the number on your post is the number in which you were chartered, so we were the 32nd American Legion Post in the State of Minnesota to be recognized.  Not bad for a small town in the southwest corner of the state!

We have started to attempt to gather any kind of historical information about our Post to compile some of what happened in our first century.  It will be a daunting task, as we have very little to work with, but the effort will be well worth it in the end.  Anyone anywhere with (almost) anything of historical significance to our home is welcome and will be appreciated.

As for our little anniversary next summer, the official recognition will be at the Dawg Days of Summer IV, which will be held during the Adrian Farm and Home Days in July.  As much work as there is to be done, it is also exciting to be preparing to celebrate this milestone!

Stay tuned!  There will be more very soon!

A New Year comes roaring in!

There is a lot going on behind the scenes as we enter a New Year.  2018 looks to be a great year for Argonne Post 32 and all of the work that we have been doing.

The calendar raffle will be drawn this Wednesday night at our monthly meeting.  We will conclude all of the work of selling the calendars and draw every winner for the year.  Only on person, who is sworn to secrecy, will know the names drawn.  They will be placed in envelopes for each winner and only revealed during each monthly meeting this year.  We will have a list of winners posted here and on our facebook page.  Stay tuned.

As if that weren’t enough, The Dawg Days of Summer Veteran’s Summit is being planned as we speak, and today a very nice development came to be.  I can’t release any of the information yet, but the overall format will be the same with a new community organization being honored at our 3rd annual event!

Dan, our website guru, has been putting in his time making the most of this great web site.  It will only get better as I get my lazy bones in gear and give him information on things like Legion Baseball and the previous and coming Dawg Days.

Last, but not least, our Service Dog Toby, along with his veteran Steve Brown, are doing GREAT and a full update will be posted very soon.  Also look for pictures of this team.

Best of luck in 2018 to you and your families!

Welcome to Argonne Post 32

It is great to be expanding the foot print of Adrian American Legion, Argonne Post 32 to a website!

I want to thank our newest Legion Member and tech guru (who will remain nameless at this point until I know if I can bust his cover) who set this site up.  I try to act like I understand things in the electronic world, but then I end up tripping on myself.  Oh well, that is what we have tech guys for!

We will be adding much to this site over the course of this winter.  We have photos, historical information and so much more to get in here.  You can also link to our Facebook page from the link on the right side of this page.  The following was my message put up there for this Thanksgiving….

“Tomorrow, many of us will sit down to a great meal with family and friends. We will eat too much, we may have a cocktail or two, watch football (maybe) and go back for seconds and thirds.

For we fortunate ones, I hope that we will all take just a moment to think of those that are not with their loved ones and of all the empty chairs at the tables again this year. Children will miss Daddy or Mommy and spouses will cook the feast alone while their loved one sleeps in the rough and maybe gets a hot meal, otherwise it will be MREs.

If you happen to know one of these families personally maybe take a minute to send a text message or make a call to tell them “Thank You” for holding down the home front while their loved one stands the line for our freedoms.

Many of us were there, overseas during the holidays, staying busy to keep our minds occupied to avoid thinking of that empty chair back home, the one that is reserved for them. I was in a noncombat area overseas so I can even imagine what it is like to spend the holidays in a combat zone.

Let’s all be thankful for this generation of volunteers that have stepped up to allow us to sleep in safety and gather on these occasions.

Be Well, Be Safe, Be Proud!
Curtis Hendel”

I hope you all have the best of days tomorrow.  Take a moment to appreciate all you have and be thankful for all of our volunteers out there.  We wouldn’t have our freedoms without them!
Happy Thanksgiving!!
